Epidaurus is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece and the oldest theater in the world

The ancient city theater of Epidaurus is located near the south of the country within the administrative region of Peloponnese. It is considered one of the most important elements of the tourist attractions of this city. This well-preserved ancient theater is considered one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world in terms of visual viewing and space.

It is probably one of the best ancient theaters, and perhaps one of the most beautiful Greek theaters in general. If you want to visit an ancient theater and amphitheater, the Epidaurus City Theater should be the first thing that comes to your mind. The Sanctuary of Aeschylus in the ancient theater of Epidaurus is considered a spiritual place worth the effort to visit. Where it can accommodate more than 12,000 people and enjoys a reputation and fame and is visited by many tourists in the summer to watch ancient Greek plays performed in the modern Greek language.

Near this theater, there are traces of an ancient temple that immortalizes Asclepius, the alleged Greek god of healing. This temple was built in the fourth century BC. Many patients were brought to this temple in the hope that Asclepius would heal them while they slept in a nearby inn. The ruins are located on the eastern shore of the Peloponnese, a peninsula in southern Greece, near a fishing village called Abydaurus, 64 km southwest of Athens.

It was a religious and cultural center in ancient times and is a comprehensive archaeological site with many interesting buildings and a recently discovered playground. Epidaurus was built around the third century BC and features a group of buildings, the most famous of which is the ancient Epidaurus TheatreThis is one of the few theaters that retains its original circular “orchestra” and has an aesthetic view from the back. And you will find that the theater (sitting area) is stunning in the way the architecture blends with the beautiful landscape.

When visiting the theatre, do not forget to stay in the middle of the circular orchestra (even in the marble square that characterizes it). You'll be amazed at how loud the words come back to your ears and how loud the more distant audience can hear. The theater is still used today and often hosts theatrical performances, concerts, and festivals. Most of them happen during the summer months.

There is a small museum near the entrance to the site which is worth a visit for the statues it contains. Most of the important statues of Epidaurus are in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. In addition to the Epidaurus Museum, there is a simple water tap to cool off in the summer sun.

Practical instructions for visiting Epidaurus

Getting to Epidaurus is easiest via the Corinth-Nauplion Highway although it is longer, as this route is faster as it runs largely on the highway and is more comfortable to drive. Following this route to Epidaurus, you will pass by Nemea and Mycene which are another special archaeological home. If you are driving from Athens you will see signs near Corinth to EpidaurusThese are signs pointing to the old coastal road (1950's).

The site of Epidaurus is exposed to the sun and can be beautiful to walk through and appropriate clothing (sneakers and sunglasses) is recommended.

Entrance to the theater will cost you €4 and you can purchase simple maps or shopping carts to visit the site. It is sold by the entrance. Food and water can be purchased near the entrance ticket kiosk, however once inside the building there are no facilities apart from utility carts near the stage.
